Role and Responsibility of Council

The governing body of the The Corporation of the Town of Goderich is it's Council. It consists of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and five Councillors. The ratepayers of the Municipality elect the Members of Council for a four-year term of office. Having both legislative and executive responsibilities, Council deals with matters that require policy direction, by-laws or by-law amendments and responses or action to pertinent issues.  

It is the role of the Head of Council (the Mayor):

  • to act as chief executive officer of the municipality;
  • to preside over council meetings;
  • to provide leadership to council;
  • to represent the municipality at official functions; and
  • to carry out the duties as the head of council under this or any other act.

  • to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality;
  • to develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the municipality;
  • to determine which services the municipality provides;
  • to ensure that administrative practices and procedures are in place to;
  • implement the decisions of council;
  • to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality; and
  • to carry out the duties of council under this or any other act.

Council Meetings

Meetings of Council are held in a hybrid format, which includes both electronic and in-person participation. You can find upcoming meeting dates and on our Agenda and Minutes page

Members of the public can view a live stream of a meeting in progress on the homepage.

Council Agendas are posted on the Wednesday prior to a regular meeting of Goderich Town Council.  Council minutes are posted following their adoption at the following regular meeting of Council. 

If you would like to be included on the agenda for any meeting, please contact the Clerk, Andrea Fisher in advance for a scheduled time, and provide a written submission detailing the nature of the request to Council for inclusion in the agenda package prior to 4:00 p.m. the Monday before the meeting of the Council.  For more information, please contact the Town Clerk

Should you wish to provide correspondence to be included in an Agenda package, please contact the Clerk, Andrea Fisher.  Materials are due the Monday before the meeting of the Council by 4:00 p.m. to be included in the Agenda package.  For more information, please contact the Town Clerk

Notification to the Clerk is not required for statutory public meetings.  These items are noted on the Town Council agendas under public meetings.
